THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A Rs.48-lakh action plan will be drawn up to tackle water shortage in the Thiruvananthapuram East Assembly constituency. In the first phase, works to the tune of Rs.10 lakh will be taken up. These decisions were taken at a meeting chaired by V. Sivankutty, MLA, to find ways to tackle water shortage in the constituency. Once the first phase is under way, the rest of the money will be made available in stages. It was decided that the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) will take emergency measures to set right leaks in existing water pipelines running through the constituency. Select officials will be given charge of this. Steps will be taken to reach water to those areas in the constituency where there is acute shortage or unavailability of water. It was also decided that works for which an estimate has already been taken will be completed speedily. In response to complaints from residents about the mode of usage of water by high-rise apartments, marriage halls and star hotels, it was decided that any complaints raised by the people in this regard will be urgently inquired into. Steps will also be taken to prevent the misuse of drinking water supplied by tankers. KWA executive engineer G. Sudev who attended the meeting said if anyone traced the identity of a water tanker that supplied drinking water to construction sites, the permit of that vehicle would immediately be cancelled. It was also decided that there will be regular follow-up meetings to monitor the implementation of the decisions.
