Chirag United defeats ONGC

Kozhikode: Chirag United, Kolkata, recorded a 2-0 win over ONGC, Mumbai, in a second division National Football League match here on Wednesday.

With seven points from four matches, Chirag United is now in strong contention for one of the two berths for the next season's premier league along with Salgaocar (eight) and Viva Kerala (six), but the latter has played only three games.

Dull first half

After a dull first half in which both the teams left each other off the hook by failing to convert several chances, Chirag United accelerated the pace after the break.

In the 80th minute, Chirag United's Surajit Chakraborty took control of the ball off a Lalmalsawma Hmar's pass and his powerful shot kissed ONGC custodian Bilifang Narzary's left hand before rolling into the post.

Six minutes later, Nigerian Theodore Sundy Wrobeh raced ahead after clearing Krishna Shirodkar's defence and his grounder went clear of a diving Narzary. — PTI
