Indians disappoint

New Delhi: Indian archers crashed out of the individual competitions at the first leg of the Meteksan World Cup at Ulsan, Korea, on Wednesday.

Not a single Indian in any of the four categories could make it to the last four stage and thereby lost the chance to come inside the medal bracket.

Best of the lot

Veteran Arjuna awardee Dola Banerjee was the best of the lot as she reached the quarterfinals stage of the women's recurve competition. Dola had defeated Novia Nuriani of Indonesia (105-97), Mi Jin Yun of Korea (109-108), Miroslava Dagbaeva of Russia (102-97) before lowering the guard against Korean Hee Ok Yun (101-103).

Other Indians in this category, Chekrovolu Swuro lost to CS Chung of Korea (108-110) in the pre-quarterfinals, L. Bombayla Devi went down to Ty Lee of Korea (100-108) in the second round and Sushma lost to Ling Zhao of China (93-105) in the first round.

In the men's recurve event, Indians failed miserably as three of the four in contention were shown the door in the first round. Dola's brother Rahul Banerjee bit the dust against Lin Jiang of China (104-109), Harish Chand Kerai lost to Simon Terry of Great Britain (91-98) and Priyank lost to Jacek Proc of Poland (98-106).

Tarundeep goes down

Experienced campaigner Tarundeep Rai managed to cross the first hurdle by defeating G. Sliwka of Poland (106-94) before going down to Brady Ellison of the USA (104-107) in the next round.

In compound women's event, Jhanu Hansdah and Sakro Besra got byes in the first round. But, in the second round, they lost to Svetlana Novikova of Russia (104-106) and Amandine Buillot of France (93-110) respectively. — PTI
