Dhobale is new chief of CII State unit

HYDERABAD: Pradeep Dhobale of the ITC was elected as new chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry, Andhra Pradesh, at its annual meeting held here on Wednesday. A chemical engineer from IIT, Bombay, Mr. Dhobale is Divisional Chief Executive, ITC Ltd - Paperboards & Speciality Papers Division. He did his professional training in France, Sweden and UK and is well-known in the paper industry for his technical and managerial abilities. The meeting also elected Utpal Sen Gupta, President, Agro Tech Foods Ltd, as Vice-Chairman of CII, AP. - Special Correspondent

Endowments Bill debate on April 9

HYDERABAD: The Bill to amend the Endowments Act, which was introduced on March 28, is likely to be taken up for discussion in the Assembly on April 9, according to the Temples Protection Movement. Welcoming the initiative taken by the Government to introduce reforms in the Act, M.V. Soundararajan, convener, on Wednesday appealed to all legislators to participate in the debate on April 9, so as to ensure its passage. Special Correspondent

Airport contract for Swiss-Indo group

HYDERABAD: GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL), which is developing the international airport at Shamshabad, has awarded the seven-year retail duty-free concession contract to Nuance Shoppers' Stop, a Swiss-Indo consortium. Nuance will be retailing international products like cosmetics, apparel and confectionary by setting up three retail stores each in the international and domestic terminals. T. Sriganesh, Chief Operating Officer, GHIAL, said in a press release on Wednesday that the stores in the international terminal would cover 2,500 sqm. The stores in the domestic terminal would be spread over 345 sqm. - Special Correspondent

Bandh hits pilgrim flow in Tirumala

Tirumala: The bandh observed against the Supreme Court orders staying the 27 per cent reservations for OBCs had its impact on the pilgrim inflow into the temple town. Though the political parties exempted both the Tirumala and Tirupati temple towns from the bandh, there was considerable decline in the flow of pilgrims as bus services were hit. The APSRTC on its part operated regular buses between both the ghat roads. - Staff Reporter

YSR pays tribute to Jagjivan Ram

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy has paid rich tributes to the memory of former Deputy Prime Minister Babu Jagjivan Ram on the occasion of his 99th birth anniversary on April 5. In a message on Wednesday, he described Jagjivan Ram as an able parliamentarian who championed the cause of the poor. 4 killed in road accident

MAHABUBNAGAR: Four persons, including three women, were killed when the autorickshaw in which they were travelling overturned near Alwanipally village in Midjil mandal on Wednesday. According to information reaching the district headquarters the driver lost control when negotiating a curve following which the vehicle overturned. The deceased were identified as Dasari Narasimloo, (35), Ale Venkatamma(40) Masamma(30) and Gorige Durgamma(40). - Correspondent

ACB raid on forest office

ELURU: Anti-Corruption Bureau sleuths from Vijayawada, Rajahmundy and the city conducted surprise checks in the office of the wildlife division of Forest Department on Wednesday. Power shutdown

ONGOLE : Transco has decided to increase power cut from the present three-and-a-half hours to five hours from Thursday

in municipal towns of Ongole, Chirala, Markapur and Kandukur in Prakasam district, said K Vijayakumar, Divisional Engineer (Operations). There would be no power supply in these towns from 6 am to 9 am and again from 4 pm to 6 pm untill further orders. _ Special Correspondent

Cancelled

Bidar: The Government has cancelled 1,329 Below Poverty Line ration cards illegally obtained by rich families in Bidar city, according to a release by Deputy Commissioner Munish Moudgil. These families would be given Above Poverty Line cards, Mr. Moudgil said. Some Government servants had also obtained BPL cards. Some families had voluntarily sought cancellation of their BPL cards, he said. A city-wide inspection was conducted after the district administration received complaints that many ineligible families obtained BPL cards, the release said. — Staff Correspondent

Contract work

Bidar: The Government has reserved 50 per cent of all work and supply contracts to those from the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes and minorities. The break-up will be 20 per cent for SCs; 5 per cent for STs; 20 per cent for Other Backward Classes and 5 per cent for minorities. This applies to building construction, rented services and supply of materials valued less than Rs. 1 lakh, a release from the District Social Welfare Officer said. But Dalit organisations have demanded that the ceiling of Rs. 1 lakh on works be removed, and that reservation be enforced in all contracts. The quota for OBCs should be at least 30 per cent, said Vaijanath Suryavanshi, convenor of the Federation of Dalit Associations. — Staff Correspondent

Protest

Bidar: Members of the Karnataka Pranta Raitha Sangha staged a protest in Bidar on Tuesday, against the delay in procurement of sugarcane by sugar factories in the district. Protesters sat on a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office. They shouted slogans against the State Government for "failing to ensure that all the sugarcane produced by farmers was bought and crushed". They submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner's office and dispersed.

Army man held

HASSAN: Nayak Subedar Babulal Sharma (45) was arrested in Sakleshpur on charge of attempt to rape the teacher of a private school in Balegadde Badavane Extension on Tuesday. He was remanded in judicial custody for 14 days, up to April 16. Superintendent of Police Panduranga Rane said that Babulal Sharma, who hails from Rajasthan, is Nayak Subedar in the 3rd Army Supply Core Centre & College, Bangalore. He was recently posted to the Kudugarahalli Sub-unit Camp in Sakleshpur. He had allegedly attempted to rape the teacher who was on her way to the school. She screamed and people from the surrounding areas came to her rescue. — Staff Correspondent

President's visit

MYSORE: President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will visit Mysore on April 8. In view of his visit, Deputy Commissioner S. Selva Kumar held a meeting with officials here on Wednesday on the arrangements to be made for the President's visit. The President will inaugurate a modern therapy unit at the Bharat Cancer Hospital and a seminar on education and spirituality on the occasion of the diamond jubilee celebrations of St. Philomena's College.
