KOLKATA: Kingfisher East Bengal warded off a spirited challenge from Hindustan Aeronautic Sports Club (HASC) to manage a 3-2 win in an 11th round match of the National Football League here at the Salt Lake Stadium on Wednesday. The win put the home side back in the title hunt. East Bengal now has 19 points and got closer to the two top sides, Mahindra United (22 points) and Dempo SC (20). HASC continued to be at the bottom with just six points. Brazilian striker Edmilson Marques opened the account in the eighth minute. Boniface Ambani doubled the lead in the 19th minute. HASC forward Sampath Kuttimani made the most of a spill by opposition custodian Abhra Mondal to direct home a cross off a pass by skipper Xavier Vijaya Kumar. East Bengal made it 3-1 in the 79th minute through Edmilson. HASC replied within two minutes as Xavier made it 2-3. - Principal Correspondent
