Indian Airlines thrashes PSC

KOLKATA: Indian Airlines thrashed Punjab Sports Club 9-1 in a group B quarterfinal league match of the Indian Oil all-India Beighton Cup hockey tournament here on Wednesday.

Sports Authority of India Training Centre held Indian Oil to a 1-1 draw in a group A league match. In another match of the same group, defending champion Punjab & Sind Bank overcame Bengal Nagpur Railway (BNR) RC by the odd goal in three.

The star-studded IA ran rings around Punjab SC players to strike in a crescendo after the local side put up a stiff challenge in the first 20 minutes or so. Once Ravinder Singh opened the goal glut in the 23rd minute field goal, there was no stopping the popular side. Samir Dad (25th), Virendra Lakra (31st), Ajit Singh (32nd), Ravinder Singh (43rd), Kulvision (53rd), Pawan Bassi (59th) and Osfa Rahman (63rd, 69th) joined the scoring act. William Masi's consolation goal came in the 51st minute off a penalty corner.

SAI Training Centre not only went ahead in the 37th minute through a Deepak Soreng's field goal but kept threatening to score more over Indian Oil at the Mohun Bagan ground. Vikramjit Singh's 41st minute penalty stroke conversion saved the day for the main sponsor's team.

PSB profitted through Saranjit Singh's eighth minute penalty corner and Mandeep Singh's 27th minute field goal against BNR. Bipin reduced the margin in the 54th minute. — Special Correspondent
