CHENNAI: Explaining that complainants should not be kept in the dark about the status of their complaints, Tamil Nadu Director-General of Police D. Mukherjee on Wednesday said that in an era of e-governance, it was not possible to withhold information.

Launching the Economic Offences Wing website (www.tneow.co.in) , Mr. Mukherjee said often complainants were kept in the dark about the fate of their complaints unless a police officer took mercy and passed on information to them. However, e-governance had changed the scenario.

Also, it was mandatory to provide information under the Right to Information Act. Now, with the click of a button one, could find out the action taken on a complaint. It also obviates the need to travel long distances, particularly by the aged and the physically challenged, to seek information.

Three units

Archana Ramasundaram, Additional Director-General of Police, EoW, said the website provided an insight into the working of EoW's three units — Commercial Crime Investigation Wing CID, Idol Wing CID and EoW.

It provided status of important cases, latest judgments, amendments to various Acts and details of the latest refund made to depositors of defaulting non-banking financial institutions.

Suggestions could be mailed to the website.
