JNNURM releases first instalment of aid

Kochi Corporation to get Rs.431 crore


  • Rs.220.30 crore for solid waste management
  • Rs.187 crore for a sewerage treatment unit for Central Kochi

    KOCHI: The Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) authorities have released Rs.431 crore to Kochi Corporation and Rs.348.64 crore for Thiruvananthapuram Corporation as the first instalment of the financial aid for various projects that are to be implemented in the cities.

    For Kochi, the mission authorities released Rs.220.30 crore for solid waste management project, Rs.187 crore for a sewerage treatment unit for the Central Kochi region and Rs.24.45 crore for upgrading surface water drainage of central Kochi.

    Thiruvananthapuram Corporation will get Rs.348.64 crore for improving water supply system of the Municipal Corporation and the adjoining three panchayats.

    These funds are from the grant component for urban infrastructure and governance under the mission programme.

    The surface water drainage project will be getting an additional support of Rs.97.80 crore, sewerage treatment project Rs.748.11 crore and solid waste management project Rs.88.12 crore.

    Nodal agency

    As the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project (KSUDP) is the nodal agency for implementing the projects, it will be receiving the funds, said C.K. Manisankar, Deputy Mayor, Kochi Corporation.

    The KSUDP will subsequently transfer the funds to Kochi Corporation.

    The process of implementing the projects will be finalised after discussions with the State Government, he said.

    Kochi Corporation plans to convene meetings of the heads of various departments and also the steering committee to prioritise the preparation of detailed project report of remaining projects that have found mention in the City Development Plan.

    The Plan was prepared by the Corporation for obtaining assistance from the mission project.

    A large number of detailed project reports are to be made by the Corporation including the projects for drainage and components of drinking water. The mission will be funding the projects that have been included in the CDP and approved by it.
