dated April 6, 1957: Alagappa Chettiar dead

We record with deep regret the death of Dr. Rm. Alagappa Chettiar, well-known educationist, industrialist and philanthropist, at 11-15 a.m. on April 5 at his residence, "Krishna Vilas," in Vepery, Madras. Dr. Chettiar was ailing for some months past and his condition took a turn for the worse early in the morning. Dr. Alagappa Chettiar fell ill in December 1955. He was showing signs of improvement but in March 1956 while at Delhi, where he had been to attend a meeting of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, he had an accidental fall which resulted in a relapse. Dr. Alagappa Chettiar is survived by his wife, Srimathi Lakshmi Achi, his daughter, Srimathi Umayal, and his son-in-law, Mr. Ramanathan Chettiar.
