KOLKATA: India has achieved a breakthrough in the Egyptian tea market with the Egyptian government deciding to buy about six million kg of CTC tea from India this year against nil now. Tea Board Chairman, Basudeb Banerjee, who is just back from Egypt told The Hindu that private imports from India would also increase to about six million kg from 2.7 million kg now. For India, this means an incremental nine million kg of CTC tea export to the African country which has been mostly dominated by Kenya. Indian Tea Association (ITA) Chairman, P. Siganporia, said "that Egypt will translate into a breakthrough in 2007 as Pakistan had in 2006". Both South and North Indian teas are expected to find a place in the basket. Mr. Banerjee said stepped up exports was likely to coincide with the setting up of an India Tea Centre in Cairo by November. "We have seen a few sites and talked to people interested in running it we plan to open it in November when the "Made in India show' would be held in Egypt," Mr. Banerjee said. A few days ahead of the Tea Board chairman's visit about six Indian traders and exporters had also gone to Egypt to participate in a buyer-seller meet.
