Changing preferences

Time was when a live stage show of music was just that — a music show.

With the advent of contests on Malayalam television channels, where they want to find how well a singer can dance (not sing), the stage shows too have begun to resemble choreographic dances than music programmes.

But are the organisers of such musical shows not taking the public for granted when they assume that everyone comes to watch the singers dance at a music programme? The recent show in Kozhikode by playback singer G. Venugopal is a case in point.

A few other singers were roped in to spice up the show with their fast numbers and dance routines.

But the audience clearly preferred Venugopal's renditions to the dance performances. It was his soulful rendition of some lovely melodies that garnered applause from the audience. P.K. AJITH KUMAR
