Letters to the Editor
This refers to the editorial "Britain in the wrong" (April 5). President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has extended a noble gesture by releasing the 15 British service personnel who violated Iran's territorial waters. The humanitarian act, described by him as a present to the British people, has eased the tensions in the region. It should serve as an eye-opener to the U.S. and the U.K.
In similar circumstances, any nation would have done what Iran did. Trespassing into the maritime waters of other nations cannot be tolerated. It is time the U.S. and its allies started respecting the sovereignty of nations.
Lt. Col. R.V.S. Mani (retd.),
The editorial says Britain and the U.S. are in illegitimate occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. The war on terror in Afghanistan was the need of that hour. The Taliban was dragging the country into the middle ages, and killing innocent people. The Afghans now have an elected government.
So the war against the Taliban regime and subsequent military assistance offered by the international community to Afghanistan cannot be clubbed with the invasion of Iraq and described as illegitimate.
