Special Correspondent

This is 21 per cent more than previous year's earnings of Rs. 2,564 crore

CHENNAI: Southern Railway earned Rs 3,101 crore in the last financial year (2006-07), 21 per cent more than the previous year's earnings of Rs. 2,564 crore.

Addressing reporters here on Thursday after reviewing the progress of projects in the State, Minister of State for Railways R. Velu said that while the passenger revenue increased from Rs. 1,364 crore to Rs. 1,649 crore (21 per cent), the freight earnings went up from Rs. 1,000 crore to Rs. 1,190 crore (20 per cent). About 551 million passengers travelled last year as against 495 million in the previous year. As for the freight traffic, Southern Railway registered a loading of 31 million tonnes, up from 27.7 million tonnes in the previous year.

The increase in the passenger and freight traffic came despite the closure of major sections for gauge conversion. Once these works were completed, the revenue would increase substantially, he said.
