Appoint protection officers: NCW

Special Correspondent

Plea for budget allocation

  • 34 Acts concerning women's issues in the pipeline
  • State stands top in atrocities against women

TIRUPATI : Girija Vyas, Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, has said that the newly enacted Domestic Violence Act will remain in limbo so long as state governments do not appoint protection officers and provide required funds in their budget for implementation of the Act.

Talking to mediapersons on Thursday, she regretted that no State Government had appointed protection officers though some states like Tamil Nadu had at least put in place a temporary official.

She said that in addition to the 22 new Acts concerning women's issues passed after the new Commission had taken over, another 34 Acts were in the pipeline. The NCW Chairperson was, however, pessimistic about the benefits of the numerous Acts and provisions reaching the target groups unless both women and men were sensitised about them. Funds for the NCW must be allocated the general budget, she said.

    Quota for women

On the delay in introduction of the Women's Reservation Bill, she said all political parties had talked about it in the run up to the elections and forgotten it later. To another question, she pointed out that AP had the dubious distinction of topping the list vis a vis the atrocities against women and violation of women's rights. Earlier at the seminar, she s underscored the need for a concerted effort by the NCW, SW Department, media, civil society and NGOs for empowerment of women.
