Shooting
NEW DELHI: Sanjeev Rajput shot a National record 1170 out of 1200 to clinch the Olympic quota place in the 50m free rifle 3-position event in the ongoing shooting World Cup at Fort Benning, U.S. on Wednesday. The improvement on his own earlier national mark of 1165, shot in the World Cup at Guangzhou last year, was however, good enough to fetch only the 11th position for the 26-year-old Rajput in a strong field of 57 shooters. Since the top 10 had either already confirmed a quota place for themselves from one of the three rifle events or were ineligible as their country had already gained two quota places in the event, Rajput got the nod for the only Olympic quota place on offer from the event in the current World Cup. Rajput has become the seventh Indian shooterto ensure a berth for the Beijing Olympic Games. The results: Men: Free rifle 3-position: 1. Artem Khadjibekov (Rus) 1276.2 (1175); 2. Jia Zhanbo (Chn) 1272.0 (1174); 3. Artur Aivazian (Ukr) 1271.6 (1174); 11. Sanjeev Rajput 1170; 38. Gagan Narang 1154; 46. Imran Hasan Khan 1151. Women: Sport rifle 3-position: 1. Sonja Pfeilschifter (Ger) 685.6 (585); 2. Yin Wen (Chn) 685.1 (584); 3. Barbara Lechner (Ger) 683.3 (586); 22. Meena Kumari 575; 30. Deepali Deshpande 572; 53. Tejaswini Sawant 561.
