Pandey, Akhil star for Karnataka

VISAKHAPATNAM: A 67-run stand for the sixth wicket between Manish Pandey (67, 7x4) and B. Akhil (32, 5x4) helped Karnataka down Goa by two wickets with a ball to spare in a round-robin league match of the inaugural South Zone Twenty20 tournament for the N. Venkata Rao trophy here on Thursday.

Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, which beat Hyderabad by six wickets in another match, have three wins from three matches.

Andhra recorded its first win by beating Kerala by 76 runs. Y. Venugopala Rao, who scored 55 (4x4, 1x6) before retiring with an injury and D. Kalyan Krishna, with a haul of four wickets, were the stars for Andhra. Kerala was dismissed for 80.

Pandey and Akhil, who also picked up three wickets in Goa innings earlier, came together after Karnataka lost four wickets in the space of eight runs, with S. Bandekar and S. Dhuri picking up two each.

Earlier, Goa scored 136 thanks to S. Jakathi (43, 4x4, 1x6) and S. Kamath (41,4x5) after Arvind (four wickets) and Akhil had the team under check.

Tamil Nadu restricted Hyderabad to 116 for nine and reached the target comfortably with captain S. Badrinath (40, 2x6) and Hemand Badani (22) adding 54 for the unbeaten fifth wicket. Karnataka and Tamil Nadu face each other on Friday in a match crucial for both teams.

The scores: At the ACA-VDCA Stadium: Goa 136 in 19.5 overs (S. Jakathi 43, S. Kamath 41, Arvind four for 24, Akhil three for 16) lost to Karnataka 140 for eight in 19.5 overs (Manish Pandey 67, Akhil 32).

Hyderabad 116 for nine (Rushi Raj 46, R. Ashwin three for 15) lost to Tamil Nadu 117 for four in 17.4 overs (S. Badrinath 40 n.o., S. Anirudha 35).

At Zinc Stadium: Andhra 156 for seven (Y. Venugopala Rao 55 retd. hurt, V. Sandeep 25) bt Kerala 80 in 16.2 overs (D. Kalyan Krishna four for 16, K. Bharat Reddy three wickets for three).
