Deora denies arm-twisting by US on gas pipeline project

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Union Petroleum Minister Murli Deora on Thursday denied that the US was arm-twisting India on the proposed gas pipeline project with Iran and said the agreement was expected to be signed by June this year.

Talking to reporters here, he said that foreign policy was being run by the Indian Government and there was no question of arm-twisting by anybody. Apart from the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline, Turkmenistan was also willing to give gas to India and self-sufficiency in domestic availability of gas was expected to be achieved in the next three to four years.

Petroleum Secretary M. S. Srinivasan said that currently there was a shortage gas supply all over the country with demand being 1,42,000 million cubic metres, against the availability of 95,000 million cubic metres.

On gas pricing, he said that it would be as per the provisions of the contracts between the developers and the Government of India.
