Untouchablity: bicycle rally launched in Anantapur

ANANTAPUR: The Kulavivaksha Vyatireka Porata Sangham and Aikya Vedika of Dalits, BCs, STs, minority associations and voluntary organisations launched a bicycle rally at Guntakal in the district on Thursday to create awareness against untouchability. The theme of their campaign is "conflict and reform".

The campaign would cover 240 villages in 25 mandals by travelling 700 km and would conclude here on April 14, the birth anniversary of B.R. Ambedkar. The bicycle rally was flagged off by Vice-Chancellor of Sri Krishnadevaraya University A. Rama Rao.

District general secretary of KVPS H. Venkatesh, who is also leading the bicycle rally, said the campaign would progress with the inspiration of two great leaders who worked for the uplift of Dalits -- B.R. Ambedkar and Babu Jagjivan Ram. In all, 50 youth were participating in the campaign and they would cover about 75 km distance every day for nine days.

In the remaining 38 mandals, which would not be covered by bicycle rally, separate campaign would be held during the same period. The campaign would create ripples in villages with confrontation, conflict and reform campaigns on the issue of untouchability. Meeting would be conducted with Dalits and other people in SCs colonies.

Component plan

They would enter temples in villages and oppose two-tumbler system in villages. He sought the cooperation of the Congress and the TDP in their campaign already being supported by 59 organisations.

They would demand distribution of three acres land to each Dalit family and strengthening of special component plan.
