KANPUR: Campaigning for the first phase of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections (April 7) ended on Thursday with Congress president Sonia Gandhi exhorting people to end the mafia rule in the State. Launching a frontal attack on the Mulayam Singh Government at a rally here, she said all sections including children, women, labourers, traders and farmers were feeling insecure, and the condition of the State was critical. The political philosophy of the present government was "phoney Samajwad" (socialism); Samajwad meant "mafia raj" and development of self (Mulayam Singh) and friends, Ms. Gandhi said.
Nithari killings
Referring to the Nithari serial killings, the Congress president said children were being killed and atrocities perpetrated on all sections. She dismissed the Mulayam Government's concern for minorities as eyewash, and ridiculed the measures taken by it for their welfare. Ms. Gandhi wondered where the crores sanctioned by the United Progressive Alliance Government for the State had gone. She asked the people to seek accounts for the money spent on welfare schemes. She called upon the people to oust casteist, communal and divisive forces from Uttar Pradesh.
Restore old order
Ms. Gandhi said the State, which once showed the way to the rest of the country, lost course today. The old order had to be restored.
