KANNUR: The Vadhashiksha Viruddha Samithi, a forum against capital punishment, will organise a fast in protest against the "denial of relief measures to prisoners in the State." Samithi activists K. Rajmohan and P.U. Meera told a press conference here on Thursday that its convener, K. Girish Kumar, would go on a hunger strike in front of the Secretariat on April 22 in protest against the State Government's "anti-democratic" approach to the prisoners. The samithi would also press various demands, including the release of prisoners recommended by the Jail Advisory Boards and consideration of clemency petitions by prisoners eligible for release. Agitations would also be organised in front of Kannur and Thrissur Collectorates on April 22, they said. The samithi said the Government was yet to take initiative to tide over obstacles following High Court intervention against the release of eligible prisoners. No decision had been taken on issues such as commutation of prisoners' jail terms, they added.
