MAN OF THE MASSES: Deputy Commissioner K.H. Aswathanarayana Gowda paying floral tributes to Babu Jagjivan Ram on his birth centenary, in Hassan on Thursday. HASSAN: Floral tributes were paid to former Deputy Prime Minister and Dalit leader Babu Jagjivan Ram on his birth centenary, in Hassan on Thursday. At a function in Ambedkar Bhavan, Deputy Commissioner K.H. Aswathanarayana Gowda, Superintendent of Police Panduranga Rane, ZP Chief Executive Officer F.R. Jamaadar and members of Dalit organisations remembered his service to the nation. Dr. Babu Jagajivan Ram Madiga Mahasabha Vedike president T. Veerabhadrappa, in a memorandum to the Chief Minister (that was presented to the Deputy Commissioner at the function) sought installation of a bronze statue of Babuji at the entrance of District Library in Hassan, construction of a Bhavan in his name, grant of 10 acres of land to Dr. Babu Jagjivan Ram Education Charitable Trust and Shivasharana Sri Harallaiah Gurupeetha in Hassan, sanction of 500 sites to pourakarmikas and leather workers in S.M. Krishna Nagar and construction of community halls in Madiga extensions in Hassan. Social Welfare Department Deputy Director Govinda Gowda, DSS leader Shankar Raju and Karnataka SC/ST Sanghatana Samithi Hassan Taluk president K.Y. Jagadish were present. Chitradurga Staff Correspondent writes MLA G. H. Tippareddy has promised to release Rs. 10 lakh from the MLA fund for installing a statue of Babu Jagjivan Ram in the city. At the birth centenary celebration of the late Deputy Prime Minister, he said Mr. Jagjivan Ram framed pro-farmer policies, which had helped the nation become self-reliant in foodgrain production. Deputy Commissioner K. Amaranarayana called upon the people to imbibe the values of great leader.
