`Endodontics is the most talked about area these days'
Bangalore: "Endodontics is the most talked about area these days. Almost all dentists practise it irrespective of their specialisation," said Anil Kohli, president of the Dental Council of India. Speaking to The Hindu here on Thursday on the sidelines of a symposium on the subject, he said endodontics was a science that was dynamic and evolving. "It is more reliable, efficient and predictable. Procedures that earlier used to take several days can now be done in one day, provided proper protocol is followed." Brig. Kohli, who is the President's dentist, said dental care was always given the last priority. This had changed with the times. "These days, a lot of importance is given to the way a person looks. It is because of this that dental health and oral hygiene are also getting a lot of attention. We have begun to hear more and more about cosmetic dental surgery." In the West, dental problems had declined, which could be attributed to an increase in awareness and economic status. "We need to create more awareness about the importance of dental health, especially among the younger generation," he said. Brig. Kohli urged the State Government not to issue essentiality certificates or permission for any more dental colleges in the State. "There already are 45 dental colleges in the State. To maintain quality, no more colleges should be granted essentiality," he said. Moreover, since there was an acute shortage of teachers, it would be advisable not to grant permission to any more colleges. The two-day symposium was organised by the Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics of V.S. Dental College and Hospital. The symposium on "Rotary route to success" was organised with the aim of bringing together academia and practitioners from across the south zone. Over
