BANGALORE: The Excise Department poured the contents of over 35,000 bottles of seized liquor into the drain on the premises of Karnataka State Beverages Corporation Ltd. in Peenya on Thursday. Some 7,000 litres of whisky, brandy and rum went down the drain. The emptied bottles were part of 7.8 lakh litres of liquor seized by the department for evasion of duty. Hyder Ali Khan, Superintendent of Excise, Excise Intelligence Bureau, Indiranagar, told presspersons that 90 per cent of the liquor seized and meant to be destroyed had already been poured down the drain. The liquor destroyed on Thursday included some 27,000 bottles of whisky seized from a lorry in Munireddypalya in 2003. The lorry was confiscated and sold. Liquor was also seized from areas such as Shivajinagar and R.M.V. Extension. He said the bottles had fake labels, which could be ascertained only by trained excise staff. Mr. Khan said the department would sell the empty bottles. It stopped selling seized liquor years ago on ethical grounds.
