RUIN: Charred remains of computer systems and furniture strew the top floor of the main branch office building of the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India in Gulbarga, where fire broke out on Thursday.
GULBARGA: Property estimated at a few lakhs of rupees was lost when fire broke out at the building of the main branch of the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India here on Thursday. In the fire, more than 10 computers, furniture and thousands of documents were destroyed on the top floor of the building before fire service personnel reached the spot and prevented the fire from spreading to other floors. Branch Manager of LIC Raghupathy told The Hindu that the top floor was used as the marketing wing, and no important documents or policy details had been lost in the fire, which had been caused due to a short circuit. He said that the amount of damage to property due to the fire was being assessed. Mr. Raghupathy said all important documents and policy details handled by the branch were kept on the ground floor. The staff at the branch were now retrieving documents from the top floor that had not been lost in the fire, he said. At the scene of the fire accident, charred furniture, ruined computer systems and damaged documents lay everywhere. The entire false ceiling and all electrical connections had been destroyed. Mr. Raghupathy said that the staff of the branch had first noticed smoke bellowing out of the windows of the top floor when they arrived at the office in the morning, and they immediately called the fire service personnel. He said the timely arrival of the fire fighters had prevented the fire from spreading to the other floors of the building. The fire accident had not disturbed the normal functioning of the branch, he said, and added that the marketing wing would be restored by Monday.
