NELLORE: The police have arrested two more persons in the illegal drugs case but the alleged kingpin continues to elude them. With this, the number of arrested persons has gone up to nine. The police sent the six packets of brown sugar and cocaine to the forensic laboratory in Hyderabad for examination.

Drip irrigation

HYDERABAD: Agriculture Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy on Thursday said that drip and sprinkler irrigation would be taken up on three lakh acres in 2007-08. Mr. Reddy at a meeting approved the action plan for micro irrigation to bring 2.25 lakh acres under drip and 75,000 acres under sprinkler irrigation. Special Correspondent

REC's term loan

HYDERABAD: The Rural Electrification Corporation (REC), a public sector enterprise, has extended a record Rs. 1,384-crore term loan to Andhra Pradesh power utilities in the last financial year. It has funded Rs. 1,870 crores in the southern zone which is a record in the last 30 years, according to a release here. - Special Correspondent

Kakinada: K Durrani, president of the district unit of the Andhra Pradesh Government Retired Employees' Association and also president of the Hindu, Muslim, Christian Samakhya, passed away at his residence on Wednesday night following brief illness.

Kakinada: The district Arya Vysya Maha Sabha has decided to constitute a special fund initially with Rs.10 lakhs for promotion of education among wards of the community.

At a press conference here on Thursday, sabha zonal chairman Vadakattu Nagababu, mandal unit president Gullapudi Babji, Adarsa Educational Institutions chairman Vobilisetti Kanakaraju said that the educational fund would be utilised for meeting the educational needs of poor Vysya students.

VIZIANAGARAM: Traders and mass organisations under the aegis of TDP observed bandh at Garividi on Thursday in protest against incompletion of rail over bridge. Traders closed shops. Sangareddy: Medak Collector B.Venkatesam will begin the Palle Nidra programme from Kangti on Friday. Three hurt in

group clash

KADAPA: Three persons sustained injuries when rival Congress and TDP members clashed in Pagidela village in Rajupalem mandal following a minor dispute. Congressmen allegedly attacked TDP members with hunting sickles after the latter removed boulders that blocked a pathway, according to the police. The injured were identified as Jayarami Reddy, Narayana Reddy and Rajeswaramma. They were admitted to the Government Hospital at Proddatur.

KADAPA: Ricih tributes were paid to former MLC Veena Vijayarama Raju. He was regarded as pioneer of teachers' movement, Rayalaseema West (Teachers) MLC P. Subba Reddy said on Thursday. The former MLC was one of the founders of State Teachers Union, he said in a meeting to mark the former's seventh death anniversary.
