State offers land for airport project
Ministry sources said the State Government's offer was received on Wednesday and would be examined by officials to ascertain the feasibility of constructing a second runway at the airport. The sources said the Ministry would decide within a week. Special Correspondent
Centre of excellence to be set up
The centre will study some of the common cancers in south India such as breast, cervical and gastric cancer using the microarray technology for identifying biomarkers. Civil suit seeks stay on film release
Justice V. Ramasubramanian passed the interim order on a civil suit filed by Mindscreen Private Limited, which had leased out film equipment to Chellammai Celluloids Private Limited, which produced the film. He was speaking at a consultative meeting here on Thursday. A police contingent headed by Deputy Superintendent of Police, comprising nine inspectors, 28 sub-inspectors, 40 head constables and 170 constables would be deployed. A team of 39 fire personnel would also be on duty. All overhead water tanks had been cleaned and about 125 sanitary workers would be drafted for duty. A medical team would also be stationed at the village. The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation would operate about 50 special buses to Narthamalai on the festival day, he said.

College closed indefinitely
College sources said the non-teaching staff refused to open the classrooms and laboratories since they had an argument with some of the teachers. When the students came to know about the protest by the non-teaching staff members, they smashed the glass panes, flowerpots and lights. The police rushed to the spot and pacified the students. The college administration has decided to close the college indefinitely until the problem is sorted out.
Couple commit suicide
The police said that K. Selvaraj (41) was affected with cancer, which was not cured even after medical attention. Hence he and his wife took the extreme step.
