Opposition leader breaks fast after Chauhan's assurance

Staff Correspondent

BHOPAL: The leader of the Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, Jamuna Devi, sat on dharna in front of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan's residence here on Thursday protesting against the latest communal riot in neighbouring Narsinghgarh town last Monday.

Ms. Jamuna Devi, who went to meet Mr. Chauhan along with the Shahar Quazi and a delegation of those representing the minority community from the riot-affected Narsinghgarh town, sat on dharna because, she said, she could not meet the Chief Minister on priority due to his other engagements.

IG rushed to Narsingharh

Later on Thursday afternoon the Chief Minister himself visited the spot where Ms. Jamuna Devi was sitting on dharna and told her that he had asked the Bhopal Inspector General of Police to rush to Narsingharh to control the situation. "The situation is now under control and the culprits will not be spared," he assured the Opposition leader. After this the dharna was called off.

Talking to The Hindu earlier while sitting on dharna, Ms. Jamuna Devi accused the Chief Minister of protecting the Bajrang Dal and RSS activists saying that they were the ones behind Monday's rioting.

State Congress spokesman Manak Agrawal said that the Narsinghgarh riot victims and those whose shops were burnt down by the rioters were being further victimised as false cases were registered against them.

He accused the State Government of failure on its part to control the law and order situation and said this was amply demonstrated by the chain of recent communal incidents at Indore, Biaora and Jabalpur.
