Sangareddy: The representatives of the four sugar mills in Medak and neighbouring Nizamabad districts have finally agreed to crush the non-agreement category sugarcane on the insistence of Minister for Tourism, Industry and Sugar J.Geetha Reddy here on Thursday. She summoned the top management and discussed the issue in front of Collector B.Venktesam and deputy Cane Commissioner Damodar. Later, addressing a press conference, the Minister declared that the four factories would finish the crushing of leftover 2 lakh tonnes of sugarcane by the end of May.

As per the understanding, Sangareddy-based Ganapathi Sugars would take up 1.70 lakh tonnes, Nizam Deccan Sugars of Medak would complete 13,000 tonnes, Trident of Zaheerabad 33,000 tonnes and Madgi (Nizamabad)-based GSR Sugars has offered to take up 30,000 tonnes of sugarcane for crushing. However, the State Government would be compensating these sugar mills with Rs.100 per tonne for crushing the excess cane under a State-wide policy.

Unauthorised cane

The Minister attributed the farmers' distress to the prevailing glut in worldwide sugar market. The State forecasting trouble has initiated steps to find market. She said that farmers in the Medak district are fortunate that they have received the highest price per tonne of cane in the State. The statutory minimum price for cane is Rs. 802 a tonne at 9 per cent recovery rate while sugar mills have offered up to Rs. 1,250 per tonne .
