Use of CFL tube-lights and electric chokes to be encouraged

  • DTL has made arrangements to procure power from three States
  • Decision to allow consumers to get their meters tested by a team from Bangalore

NEW DELHI: Buoyed by the response to its power saving initiatives, the Delhi Transco Limited has decided to intensify the drive to conserve energy. Having paved the way for phasing out of the incandescent lamps by promoting CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lamps), that help save energy, DTL is all set to encourage CFL tube-lights and electric chokes and introduce prepaid meters in all Government buildings.

DTL will shortly invite bids from companies for manufacture of CFL tube-lights, which in turn will be supplied to consumer s through discoms. "Following the feedback from consumer we have decided to promote tube-lights instead of lamps as they are more popular. We are also intensifying our drive to save power," said Chief Managing Director of Transco Rakesh Mehta.

Faced with a task of meeting an anticipated demand of 4,100 MW in the forthcoming months, DTL that has made arrangements to procure power from three States wants consumers to do their bit by cutting down on wastage. "Everyone complains that there is no power, but little is being done to conserve it. We are going ahead with the mandatory implementation of prepaid meters in Government buildings to check wastage. Automated meters will also help the departments keep track of the electricity they have consumed," said Mr. Mehta, adding: "It will also resolve the is sue of unpaid or irregular billing." The Delhi Government has notified the mandatory use of CFL lamps, electronic chokes and solar water heaters in all Government buildings. An upfront subsidy of Rs. 6,000 is also given to consumers opting for solar water heaters.
