Bail for four tribals

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: Four tribals who were arrested on the charge of propagating Maoist ideology by screening the movie `Lal Salam' in remote villages in Gajapati district were granted bail by the Additional District Judge of Paralakhemundi.

The counsel of the tribals Upendra Prasad Nayak argued that if screening the movie was illegal, then Nandita Das who was associated with the film should also be arrested. Mr. Nayak also gave verbal undertaking to the court to make efforts to produce Ms. Das as a defence witness during the trial.

Speaking to The Hindu , Mr. Nayak said though the bail orders were issued by the court on April 3, the accused persons were yet to be released as it was taking time for them to arrange for surety at Judicial Magistrate (First Class) R. Udaygiri. Hailing from Mahona block in Gajapati district, Prashant Kadraka, Narendra Dengamaka, Manoj Majhi and Maleka Majhi were now lodged at the Berhampur circle jail.
