`Power News' inaugurated

NEW DELHI: An informative television programme on the power sector titled "Power News" was inaugurated by Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde at FICCI here on Wednesday.

Mr. Shinde said "Power News" would be an effective means to present the electricity scenario in the country, recent Government initiatives, renovation and modernisation. Highlighting important issues related to the Indian energy sector, the programme will be aired on Zee Business from April 14.

Plan to celebrate natural health

NEW DELHI: The International Foundation of Natural Health and Yoga will celebrate "Prakritik Chikitsa Divas" this coming Monday at the Indian National Science Academy here. An exhibition along with a demonstration on naturopathy treatment will also be conducted at the venue. The events are conducted to create awareness about the need to maintain perfect health through naturopathy and yoga. Leading naturopaths will deliver lectures and speak about various diseases during the event. Eminent educationists and doctors will also be present at the function.

Blood donation camp

NEW DELHI: A blood donation camp was organised by Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University in association with Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, Shahdara, at its Kashmere Gate campus here on Monday.

The University organises the camp every year to commemorate the birthday of its founder Vice-Chancellor K. K. Aggarwal on April 1. This year an eye-check up camp was also held. A number of students, faculty members and staff of the University came forward to donate blood.

Annual show held

NEW DELHI: Apeejay Institute of Design, Tughlakabad, hosted its annual graduate show, "Fifth Dimension", on its campus here recently.

The event showcased the print and animation projects of the graduating students of Multimedia and Applied Arts. Various designers and animators attended the two-day event.

UK honour for ICRI

NEW DELHI: The Institute of Clinical Research (India) was recently awarded the prestigious UK-India Education and Research Initiative award for translational medicine and molecular biology.

ICRI in association with Cranfield University, UK, has been awarded a grant of 23,000 pounds per year for a period of five years for clinical research.

UKIERI is an initiative of the U.K. and India for working together in education and for initiating higher education programmes in the country.

Former Punjab DGP suspended

CHANDIGARH: Former Punjab police chief S S Virk has been suspended on the charge of purchasing land in violation of service rules.

``The order of Mr. Virk's suspension was issued on Wednesday. The copies of the order have been sent to him, Punjab police chief N P S Aulakh and Union Ministry of Home Affairs,'' Punjab Principal Secretary, Home Affairs, B C Gupta said here on Thursday.

Two killed, over 200 huts gutted

BHAGALPUR: Two persons, including a child, were killed when a big fire gutted over 200 mud houses in Bihar's Bhagalpur district on Thursday, police said.

The fire raged through Bhavanpura village in Kharik block of the district in the evening roasting alive two persons and about a dozen cattle, sources said.

Property worth several lakhs of rupees was said to have been destroyed in the blaze.

CPI-Maoist leader held in Bihar

SASARAM: Matuli Cheroo, a self-styled commander of the banned CPI-Maoist, was arrested at Aamdih village in Bihar's Rohtas district on Thursday, officials said.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team assisted by the Special Auxiliary Police (SAP) and Central Reserve Police Force raided a house at Aamdih and took Cheroo into custody.

Cheroo has been charged with involvement in seven criminal cases in the district.

Three killed in bus accident

JAMMU: Three persons were killed and five injured when a bus coming from Delhi collided head-on with a truck at Chadwalmore, 70-km from here, on Jammu-Pathankot national highway early on Thursday morning, police said.

The accident happened at around 6.30 a.m. in which three persons died on the spot while five others seriously injured, they said.

The injured were rushed to Kathua hospital, where the condition of three is said to be serious, police said adding that the identity of deceased is being ascertained.

Jawan injured in grenade blast

JAMMU: A jawan was critically injured when a grenade exploded accidentally during a training session in Rajouri district early on Thursday.

The grenade exploded during a demonstration before the troops in the army training camp in Thanamandi belt, officials said.

Havaldar Sonar Mal suffered severe injuries in the blast and was hospitalised, they said.

Oasis Kraft mela

CHANDIGARH: Haryana Minister of State for Tourism and Forests Kiran Choudhry said on Thursday that the 10-day Oasis Kraft Mela at Karnal had generated an overwhelming response.

She disclosed that over 150 craftsmen and weavers from North India had participated and approximately 40, 000 tickets were sold to the visitors.

The mela was inaugurated by Haryana Chief Secretary Prem Prashant on March 28.

Ms. Choudhry said these melas were organised to provide a common platform to the craftsmen and artisans, especially belonging to the rural areas, for showcasing their products.
