Patil's assurance to Gujarat riot victims

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Thursday assured a delegation of representatives of survivors of the Gujarat riots from 12 districts in the State that the Centre would put in place a monitoring mechanism for ensuring that the compensation package reached the victims.

The delegation on behalf of over 7,500 survivors of the riots urged the Home Minister to enhance the compensation package and make jobs available to those disabled in the riots.

Teesta Setalvad, social activist who led the delegation along with members of Citizens for Justice and Peace, said only a few survivors got compensation and there was no mechanism to monitor whether the compensation given by the Centre was reaching them or not. She said the housing compensation of Rs. 50,000 was too meagre and demanded a higher package.
