Jagjit Singh Chohan dead

CHANDIGARH : Khalistan ideologue Jagjit Singh Chohan (80) died on Wednesday following a massive heart attack at his residence at Tanda in Hoshiarpur district, his family said. One of the original founders of the Khalistan movement, Mr. Chohan secretly returned to India at midnight on June 27, 2001 after having stayed in Britain for 21 years. Mr. Chohan, who had declared a separate Republic of Khalistan at the height of militancy in Punjab in the early 1980s, left India to avoid arrest for terrorist activities. His passport was also revoked.

While announcing Khalistan formation, he reportedly opened consulates in other countries and issued passports and currency of the new entity. — PTI
