India and Kazakhstan share opening singles

ALMATY: Rohan Bopanna gave the visitor a rousing start by winning the opening singles, but Kazakhstan shot back with its No.1 Alexei Kedriouk, making it 1-1 in the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania group `I' play-off at the Baganashil indoor sports complex here on Friday.

The 26-year-old Bopanna, returning to the squad after having skipped the earlier tie against Uzbekistan, proved too good as he overpowered Dmitriy Makeyev 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 in an hour and 20 minutes.

However, Karan Rastogi found it hard to match Kedriouk in the second rubber though he managed to win the third set and take the fourth to the tiebreak.

Kedriouk, who had lost twice in four meetings to Karan, kept the hopes of the host alive with a 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(2) victory in two hours and nine minutes.

In the crucial doubles on Saturday, Leander Paes will partner Bopanna against Kedriouk and Makeyev.
