Chennai:
"Education is now linked to money and employment," Madras High Court Judge V. Ramasubramaniam said here on Thursday.
Addressing graduates at the annual convocation of Guru Nanak College (evening), he said the unholy alliance between education and wealth pervaded all educational levels. "All degrees and diplomas have been converted into begging bowls to seek employment," he said.
Quoting Swami Vivekananda, he said the role of education was to build one's character, mental strength and enable the student become self-sufficient.
College Principal John Morais, presenting the annual report, said the college had introduced new courses in the evening college. Degrees were presented to 290 students of the undergraduate and postgraduate sections of the evening college. Anand M.P. from the Mathematics department secured the 10th rank and the first rank in Sanskrit at the University level. Sriram R. from the Department of Hindi of the undergraduate stream secured the ninth rank.
