Letters to the Editor
This refers to the report that the Tamil Nadu Government has decided to accept the recommendation of the State Backward Classes Commission to provide reservation for Muslims and Christians. When the Andhra Pradesh Assembly passed a law providing 5 per cent reservation for Muslims in employment and education, the High Court struck it down as unconstitutional. The issue is pending before the Supreme Court. It is unfortunate that the Tamil Nadu Government should have succumbed to vote bank politics.
Ravikumar Sreepada,
The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's announcement aggravates the reservation conundrum. Such policies of appeasement will not only discriminate against but also marginalise those who do not enjoy any reservation.
R. Muthumanickam,
The proposal is most unfortunate. Tamil Nadu is already overloaded with reservation, which is well above the 50 per cent limit prescribed by the Supreme Court. It is a pity that the so-called progressive leaders of the State who swear by a casteless society should have resorted to such a move.
V.S. Ganeshan,
Let the politicians first address the plight of the poor Dalit Christians instead of extending reservation to elite Christians.
Franklin Caesar Thomas,
