CHENNAI: A function in the city on Friday to pay homage to industrialist-educationist Rm. Alagappa Chettiar saw Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram calling for accelerating the current level of growth recorded by the country. Releasing a postal stamp in memory of Mr. Chettiar, the Chief Minister said: "the present growth is only a beginning. Let our journey go on, unmindful of the hurdles and opposition." Mr. Chidambaram, who represents Sivaganga in the Lok Sabha (the region to which Chettiar belonged), said there was no pride involved in claiming that one belonged to a backward region. People from such regions should strive to shed the "backward region" tag. Pointing out that there were many more backward regions in other States than in Tamil Nadu, the Union Minister referred to the status of developmental work on in the Sivaganga district. He had suggested to the Union Minister for Shipping, Highways and Road Transport T. R. Baalu the matter of bringing the area under the network of national highways. There was a proposal to upgrade the Tondi fishing harbour (in the neighbouring Ramanathapuram district) into a cargo terminal. Mr. Karunanidhi said Mr. Chettiar's efforts benefited the youth in large measures. Mr. Chidambaram said the industrialist used his close rapport with eminent personalities for the welfare of the public. State Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan commended Chettiar and his daughter Umaiyal Ramanathan for their services in the area of higher education. Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology Dayanidhi Maran said the United Progressive Alliance Government, since its assuming office in May 2004, issued 32 stamps connected with the State. E.M. Sudarasana Nachiappan, Member of Parliament, appealed to the Chief Minister to take steps to set up a special economic zone in Karaikudi. Ms. Ramanthan urged Mr. Karunanidhi to order the inclusion of a lesson on her father in school textbooks.
