BELLARY: Implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) in the district was likely to begin before the end of this month, according to C.M. Shirol, Chief Executive Officer, Bellary Zilla Panchayat. Speaking to The Hindu here on Friday, Mr. Shirol said that a household survey had to be conducted and job cards had to be issued before implementing the scheme. According to him, these two aspects were important and would be accorded priority. A training programme to impart training to officials on how to prepare the schemes, survey, maintenance of accounts and records and so on was being held in Bangalore. Two officials from the Bellary Zilla Panchayat would be attending the training programme.
Household survey
After their return the work on the household survey would commence, he said. Projects was aimed at providing employment to the poor, he said adding that it was a need-based programme and would ensure employment for about 100 days. Bellary was recently included under the scheme. The Union Government would release 90 per cent of the funds for the scheme and the balance ten per cent would have to be shouldered by the State Government, he said.
Experiences
He said that all efforts would be made to implement the scheme effectively and try to overcome the lacunae by taking into account the experiences of the districts that have already implemented the scheme.
