Meet on OBC quota

HYDERABAD: An all-party meeting on April 12 and a `chalo Delhi' programme shortly will be organised by the Andhra Pradesh Backward Classes Welfare Association, which is spearheading the agitation to press for OBC reservations. These decisions were taken on Friday at a meeting of BCs, caste and women's organisations, intellectuals and advocates here, according to R. Governor's wife hospitalised

HYDERABAD: Governor's wife Narmada Thakur underwent an angioplasty procedure at Apollo hospitals here on Wednesday for the removal two arterial blocks.

Award for scholar

HYDERABAD: Hindi scholar and translator P. Vijayaraghava Reddy has been selected for the `Babulal Goenka Sarvashresta Hindi Sahitya Puraskar' awarded by Bangalore-based Kamala Goenka Foundation.

The award, given once in two years, comprises a cash prize of Rs. 21,000 and a citation. It will be given away on April 14 at Bangalore. - Special Correspondent

2 children drowned

GUNTUR: Two schoolchildren, who had gone to fetch water from a tank in R. Agraharam in Guntur, got drowned.

Residents of R. Agraharam, Asif, 11, and Pavan Kalyan, 8, went to the local Shiva temple tank to fetch water. They accidentally fell into the tank, as the edges were slippery, Lalapet SI Hanumantha Rao said. While the body of Asif was fished out on Friday morning, the search was on to find Kalyan's body. - Staff Reporter

Four houses gutted

KADAPA: Four thatched houses were gutted in Venkateswara Colony in Jammalamadugu on Thursday night. Friction between over-head electric wires caused sparks which fell on a thatched roof and engulfed four houses. -Staff Reporter

Man jailed for killing wife

KADAPA: Rajampet Munsif Magistrate Easwara Rao has sentenced Dasari Ramachandra of Ayyalarajupalle Harijanawada in Obulvaripalle mandal to eight years imprisonment on charges of killing his wife. The Magistrate also sentenced a co-accused Dasari Chennakesavulu to undergo one-year imprisonment for giving false evidence in a bid to mislead the case.

Man found dead

KURNOOL: An unidentified person aged 24 years was found dead near Hebbatam in Holagunda mandal of Kurnool district on Friday. The body was recovered from the canal with injuries on it. -Special Correspondent

RTC driver killed in accident

VIZIANAGARAM: RTC bus driver Ch. Chinna Rao (57), who sustained injuries in an accident, died on way to K.G. Hospital at Visakhapatnam. The accident occurred when the bus he was driving from Parvathipuram to Puligummi hit a tree under Sitanagaram police limits on Friday. Sitanagaram SI P. Sanyasi Rao said the driver had lost control on the narrow road. Passengers and conductor escaped unhurt.

Teachers to boycott

VIZIANAGARAM: Joint Action Committee of Teachers' Organisation decided to boycott SSC spot valuation, JAC leaders said. . They were demanding implementation of common seniority and abolition of apprentice system.

Kakinada: The JACTO has reiterated its decision to boycott the SSC papers sport valuation.

Cash prizes presented

Kakinada: Cash prizes of Rs.10,000 for first ranker, Rs.5,000 for second ranker and Rs.3,000 for the third ranker in `Aryabhatta Pratibha Puraskar-2007' flash test were presented at a function held at Aditya Academy premises here on Thursday night under the aegis of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Charitable Trust . Stir against closure

of depot

VIZIANAGARAM: All-party leaders on Friday staged picketing at RTC bus depot here in protest against the government's decision to close the depot. A large number of people and party cadres led by former MLA Sobha Hymavathi (TDP), CPI(M) executive committee member T.

Suryanarayana and CPI secretary P. Kameswara Rao blocked entry of the depot since morning. Mrs. Sobha Hymavathi said indefinite agitation would be intensified further until all the buses withdrawn were brought back and dropped the proposal to close the depot.
