CHENNAI : Union Minister of Law H.R. Bhardwaj and Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh have given written assurances to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi that all necessary steps would be taken by the Central Government to ensure the validity of the law providing for 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in higher education institutions. Thanking Mr. Karunanidhi for his letter dated April 2 expressing his concerns about the Supreme Court order, Mr. Bhardwaj in his letter said he had issued instructions to the legal counsel to explore various possibilities to ensure reservation. The Government would use the best legal talent to get the validity of the law in question upheld, Mr. Bhardwaj added. Mr. Arjun Singh in his letter assured Mr. Karunanidhi that his suggestions would be considered for deciding the further course of action.
"Solace"
Releasing the contents of the letters to the media here on Friday, Mr. Karunanidhi said the letters had given him solace. Criticising the previous All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government for not taking any steps to bring down the prices of essential commodities, the Chief Minister said the aim of selling commodities through fair price shops was to control the open market price. He said it was the present Government which was supplying rice at Rs. 2 a kg through ration shops.
"No right to criticise"
AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa had no right to criticise the DMK Government as the prices of the commodities during her regime were higher than the prevailing rates. Mr. Karunanidhi said the Government had not increased the bus fare even by a single paisa and if anyone tried to launch a false campaign or agitation, the Government would take necessary action.
