Erode
R. Sundaram
ERODE: "Once in two weeks, officers visit our area and promise us water supply, but for the last five or six years we are living without water. Hygiene in the area is very low, as there are no toilet facilities," said a nomadic group living on the side of Periya Agraharam main road.
Temporary sheds
Six years ago five or six nomadic families erected temporary sheds on the Erode-Bhavani road pavement on the Erode Municipal and Periya Agraharam Panchayat borders. All of them leave the tents in the morning. They earn a living by selling beads. A few men work in dyeing industries on weekly wages. There are now more than 300 nomadics living here.
Toilet facility
They don't get water supply. Nor do they have any toilet facilities. They go to nearby Municipal VOC Park early morning to collect water for domestic use and a few depend on street pipes. The nomadics said they got ration rice. But water is a major problem. They have already asked the district administration to instruct the municipal authorities to fix a water connection near their tent. "We are using the nearby lane as toilet and only during night did they attend the nature's call. In daytime they go to a pay and use toilet half-a- kilometer away from their place. In the surroundings drainage water is stagnated and the smell emanating from there is unbearable. The area is also a breeding ground for mosquitoes. A team of officials should be sent here to assess the situation,'' they said.
