BANGALORE: To create better understanding of the reality of healthcare, the Bangalore Medical College (BMC) Development Trust and BMC Alumni Association will conduct a panel discussion on "Adverse Medical Events" on the college premises on Sunday. Giving details of the event, trust chairman K.M. Sreenivasa Gowda and secretary Lakshman told presspersons that the discussion is part of a series of panel discussions on "Consumerism and Health Care". The panellists include a plastic surgeon K.S. Shekar, consumer activist Y.G. Murlidharan, lawyer C.H. Hanumanthraya and a journalist, Dr. Sreenivasa Gowda said. Explaining the necessity of such a discussion, Dr. Lakshman said healthcare is now considered a service industry where the patient "purchases health". "Medicine is at crossroads and is considered a service industry where health is purchased. Like in any other commodity, there are certain expectations from such a purchase and when the reality falls short of expectations, dissatisfaction and conflict occur," he said. This explains the increasing number of litigations and criticism against health care professionals and establishments. The root cause for this is lack of awareness of what doctors and health establishments can really deliver among all stakeholders, Dr. Lakshman said.
