Sports centre inaugurated
Speaking on the occasion, B.D. Chandiwala Sewa Smarak Trust Society secretary Bhuwan Mohan said the objective behind setting up the centre was to promote sports in the country. He said the fully air-conditioned complex has 10-metre indoor shooting range equipped with the latest technology, world-class squash court with glass walls, swimming pool, fitness centre, wooden-floor badminton courts, tennis courts and other such facilities. Bharatiya Janata Party MP Vijay Kumar Malhotra and Delhi Congress chief Ram Babu Sharma were also present.
Charge against Sub-Inspector
According to the police, Sub-Inspector Harpal Singh had received a tip-off on Friday morning that a local bad character Rajbir had stored several cartons of illicit liquor in his house. When Harpal reached the house to inquire, he found it locked. He then climbed up a ladder to enter from the roof. When a local resident Sandhya Verma protested, an altercation broke out between the two. She then filed a complaint against the policeman. Local residents later demonstrated outside the police station seeking action against the policeman.
Elderly man commits suicide
According to the police, Lalit Chand Joshi jumped from the third floor of a Sector-12 DDA flat in Dwarka and ended his life. Mr. Joshi, a native of Uttrakhand, had come here a couple of days ago to meet his daughter and her family. No suicide note has been recovered. He was a cancer patient and was depressed due to his prolonged illness.
Smuggling charges framed after 21 years
``Prima facie, on the basis of material on record, there is strong suspicion in respect of the commission of offence by the accused persons for which the charges under the Customs Act is liable to be framed,'' Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kamini Lau said in a recent order. The Department of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) had on June 2, 1985, nabbed Surender Kumar Arora, Niranjan Kumar and Umesh Chand Verma, from near Oberoi Maidens Hotel here while the former two were allegedly handing over a bag of gold biscuits to Verma. The bag was found to be containing 180 gold biscuits worth Rs 43.2 lakh and in a search of Arora's house, some unaccounted cash and Saudi Riyals were also recovered by the DRI officials, the prosecution had alleged.
