BANGALORE: Bangalore city and several other areas in the State faced load-shedding on Saturday due to multiple technical snags that hit power generation by four units of the thermal power generation station at Talcher in Orissa as well as Unit-I of the Raichur Thermal Power Station (RTPS). The State is facing a shortage of about 600 MW of power due to the problems with respect to various generating stations including Supa and Nagjhari.
Power generation
But the RTPS Unit-I, with a capacity of 210 MW, also stopped generation for the last couple of days. Karnataka's power problem assumed a crisis proportion on Saturday when all the four generating units of the National Thermal Power Corporation generating station in Talcher stopped generation. Karnataka is getting a share of about 200 MW from this central generating station. With this, the total power shortage in the State increased to more than 1000 MW making it unmanageable for the power supplying utility, sources in the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) told The Hindu . This, in turn, resulted in a steep fall in the power supply frequency threatening the stability of the power grid. Following this, the power supply utilities resorted to load-shedding.
Load-shedding
Load-shedding of about 30 minutes was enforced in several areas of Bangalore on rotation as an emergency. It was decided to introduce load-shedding as measure to make up for the shortage of power and also to prevent the collapsing of the southern power grid.
