`Fastest' multi-function inkjet takes on laser printers

HP unveils new range of office desktop printers in India

BANGALORE: Hewlett Packard has launched in India what is claimed to be the fastest desktop multi-function colour inkjet printer in the world at price and performance points that may give laser printers a good run for their money.

The Officejet Pro L7580 is a standard A-4 sized all-in-one that prints, faxes, scans and copies in colour.

The print speed is 34 pages per minute in colour and 35 ppm in monochrome , while the print resolution is 2400 by 4800 dots per inch... . specifications that were hitherto achievable only with laser technology. The 7580 can print and scan simultaneously on both sides of the paper; can print photos directly from the camera or from a `thumb drive' memory stick loaded with photo files. The scanner comes with a 3-D mode for solid objects. The L7580 costs Rs. 17,000.

The machine is one of four being launched nationally this week: The slightly cheaper (at Rs. 14,000) L7380 does not have the direct photo printing or network printing features of the 7580, but is comparable in other specifications. Also launched on Tuesday are two print-only models the K5300 (Rs. 6,500) and K5400 (Rs. 8,400), which are, in fact, marginally faster than the multi-function models. "These printers are at least 30 per cent cheaper per page, for colour and 25 per cent cheaper for monochrome, than laser printers for similar quality,'' Ashwini Aggarwal, HP's Country Manager (Business Imaging and Printing), said in a briefing to The Hindu that "The per-page cost for the L7580, will be around 64 paise at best quality and 32 paise at draft mode.''
