New Mangalore Port Chairman clarifies

Staff Reporter

MANGALORE: P. Tamilvanan, Chairman, New Mangalore Port, has issued the following clarification with regard to the news item "Slowdown in traffic at New Mangalore Port — Impact of lower exports of iron ore concentrates from KIOCL", which appeared in The Hindu dated April 7, 2007.

"It is reported that the shortfall of cargo in respect of KIOCL is 3.1 million tonnes, whereas actually it should be 2.8 million tonnes.

"Further, it is also reported that the shortage in iron ore traffic is due to the move by the Union Finance Minister to levy duty on export of iron ore in this year's budget. However, it is clarified that the above views are not mine or that of the Port. This may kindly be noted."
