LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh PWD and Energy Minister Shivpal Singh Yadav, who is Chief Minister Mulayam Singh's brother, was reportedly detained on Saturday at the Jaswantnagar police station where he sat on a dharna in protest against the allegedly intimidatory tactics adopted by the Election Commission. He said the unprecedented security measures resulted in a decline in the polling percentage, particularly in the so-called "Yadav heartland" of Etawah, Mainpuri, Etah and Auraiya districts.

Chief Electoral Officer Anuj Kumar Bishnoi declined to comment on the charge, but said the strict arrangements were not the reason for the low turnout.
