EC notice to Mulayam
Special Correspondent
New Delhi:
Taking a serious view of a purported speech by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh seeking votes on caste basis, the Election Commission on Friday issued notice, asking him to show cause why action should not be taken against him for violating the model code of conduct.
The notice said it came to the EC's knowledge that on March 30 Mr. Singh, addressing a meeting at Lalitpur, asked voters of a particular caste to vote for his Samajwadi Party.
The EC said "the allegation, if found correct, amounts to violation of the code and is a corrupt practice too under the Representation of the People Act."
