Pranab injured in road accident


Kolkata: External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee was seriously injured when his car was involved in a head-on collision with a truck near Nakashipara in West Bengal's Nadia district on Saturday night.

Mr. Mukherjee, 72, had 12 stitches in the head and was treated for injuries in the body at the Bethuadahari Primary Hospital. He was conscious, the State Home Secretary, P.R. Roy, told PTI. Later, Mr. Mukherjee was rushed to the Krishnanagar Hospital. His condition was stated to be stable.

The Bahrampur-bound truck skidded off the road and collided with Mr. Mukherjee's car after the pilot car and other vehicles of the convoy passed the area, Mr. Roy said.

A team of Army doctors from the Command Hospital as also a team of neurophysicians from Kolkata rushed to Nadia.

Mr. Roy said CLP leader and PCC general secretary Manas Bhuniya and another State leader Pradyot Guha were also injured.

The condition of the car driver and the Minister's security guard is also serious. — PTI
