Ophthalmologists told to create awareness of eye donation

PUDUCHERRY: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Sunday called upon ophthalmologists to create awareness among the public of the importance of proper eye care, eating nutritious foods for better eyesight and of eye donation.

Speaking at the silver jubilee celebration of the Pondicherry Ophthalmology Association (POA) here, Mr. Rangasamy said that eye donation, blood donation and `anna dhanam' were the three most important services to mankind.

He said that even the common man was provided quality healthcare in the Union Territory. The Government medical college would start functioning by next year, and Puducherry would produce more quality doctors. He also released the silver jubilee souvenir on the occasion.

Jawarhalal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education Research (JIPMER) Director K.S.V.K. Subba Rao said that Puducherry would soon become a hub of medical activity, and added that the medical care provided in the Union Territory was comparable to anywhere else in the world. He said that both the Government and private hospitals provided quality medical care and had various medical specialities. General secretary of the POA Vanaja Vaithianathan said that all ophthalmologists, doctors, specialists in Government and private sector, nursing staff, paramedical staff must voluntarily pledge to donate their eyes and should take the responsibility for motivating others to donate eyes. She also requested the Government to make favourable allocations to reimburse for community activities of individuals and institutions, as had been available in other States.

N.S.J. Jayapal, Chairman, Olugaret Municipality, Taraprasad Das, president, All India Ophthalmological Society, V. Velayutham, president, Tamil Nadu Ophthalmic Association and Govindarajan, Medical Superintendent, Government General Hospital were also present.
